Bangladesh inherited the leftover wealth and resources, badly ravaged during the Independence War, of the regional office of the Pakistan DCA. It then successfully raised its status to a full-fledged organization of a sovereign state.
Over the years, the infrastructure and facilities have been developed to meet the demands of the time, befitting the needs of an independent State. The airport at Tejgaon, Dhaka was the only international one and had been the centre of DCAs activities. This airport began to fail to fulfill the requirements of a modern international airport and of the principal airport of an independent State. At Kurmitola, Dhaka a new airport was constructed with the technical support of French experts. Operational activities were shifted from Tejgaon to Kurmitola in the year 1980. This airport was renamed as Zia International Airport in 1983 and in 2010 as Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. It has been the centre of all operational activities of CAAB within the country, and hub airport of the region.
Shah Amanat International Airport (SAIA), Chittagong is the second largest airport of the country. Shah Amanat International Airport (SAIA) has been developed with the financial assistance of Japanese Government. It is now possible to operate wide-bodied aircrafts like Boeing 777-300 (ER) It acts as an alternate airport to HSIA for wide bodied aircraft.

There are three International Airports in the country.
1. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka
This is the largest and the principal international airport of the country. It is situated at the capital city Dhaka. Almost all international passengers embark at and disembark from HSIA. More than 90% of aeronautical functions of CAAB is carried out from it.
2. Shah Amanat International Airport, Chittagong
This airport is situated in the port city of Chittagong. It is the second largest airport and the alternate airport to HSIA.
