Peruvian Caballito reed board demo tours through Australia

The Australia/Peru World Surfing Reserve Tour 2016 features the Peruvian Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve Delegation and Gold Coast Surfing Legends Rabbit Bartholomew and Cheyne Horan.

This unique International Tour with a surfing environmental message of ocean awareness will take three weeks, be hosted at 16 functions, and covering over a 1000ks of iconic Australian surfing locations.

The Peruvian Delegation is headed by Peru’s first World Surfing Champion (1965) Felipe Pomar who is 72 and is still charging 30ft waves. Felipe now lives in Hawaii, is a supreme fitness guru and is joined by fellow Peruvians from the Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve committee. Huanchaco is the 5th WSR in the World.

Carlos Antonio Ferrer is a representative of the Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve committee and member of Save the Waves Vision Council, an International panel that selects WSR's.

Carlos Ucanan Arzola known as "Huevito" is an Indigenous 500th descendant who will demonstrate the ancient art of Caballito surfing that dates back 5,000 years to the Moche Civilization pre Inca.

Huevito is a WSR Ambassador from Huanchaco that celebrates and preserves the culture of the Caballito de Totora (reed board.)

Called the King of the Caballito, Huevito will construct a reed board while in Australia and demonstrate the ancient art of wave riding that the Peruvians maintain is where surfing started.

This will be the first time that the Caballito de Totora reed board will be constructed, launched and demonstrated in Australia.

The aim is to launch the Australian Peruvian World Surfing Reserve Tour and Caballito reed board demonstration at Bondi Beach on Wednesday 24th February at 8am by Huevito the King of the Caballito to be cheered on by Surfing Legends Rabbit Bartholomew and Cheyne Horan.

It’s Felipe, Carlos and Huevito’s first time in Australia. They will be joined by former multi National Champion Roberto Muelas Meza of Punta Hermosa, Peru.

Muelas is owner of OlasPeru the biggest Peruvian surfing website and who has recently written the most definitive comprehensive book on Peru's surfing history and coached 2004 World Women’s Professional Champion Sofia Mulanovich of Punta Hermosa.

Muelas has competed in Australia and has brought out a cameraman Luis Tantajulca to document this epic East Coast road trip taking in iconic Australian surfing locations such as Bondi, Manly, Crescent Heads, Yamba, Ballina to Byron, Noosa and Gold Coast.
